Bangkok is Thailand's capital and its largest city. The city serves as Thailand's administrative, economic, cultural and educational center, and a major commercial and transportation hub for Southeast Asia. The Thai refer to Bangkok as 'Krung Thep,' which means City of Angels. Europeans once called it the Venice of the East because it had numerous canals, many of which still exist.

As Thailand's main port, Bangkok has always been more cosmopolitan than other regions of the country. The city also has significant minorities of Chinese, Indians, Arabs, Malays, Europeans and Americans. In addition to Thai, the national language, English is widely employed in Bangkok. It is taught in secondary schools and in colleges and universities, and used extensively in the important tourism industry.

KEI students take courses at the Mahidol University International College (MUIC), the English-speaking college of Mahidol University. Courses are taught in English to international students and to Thai students wishing to improve their English skills.

The International College is located in Salaya, a suburb of Bangkok. Salaya is about 45 minutes by bus from central Bangkok. It is a calm, residential area, perfect for study and meditation.

What makes MUIC different?

  • Founded: 1990s
  • Oldest and considered the best English-language school in Thailand
  • 140 professors and lecturers
  • Enrollment: 2,000 students
  • 10% of student body international, 10% Thai, 20 countries represented

Most courses at MUIC are awarded 4 quarter credits. Program transcripts are issued by Mahidol University International College or Clark Atlanta University (accredited in the USA). Students should consult with the study abroad and/or academic advisor at their university about course selection and approval, credit transfer, and program transcripts.

Professional internships are available in business, marketing, finance, law, information systems, and international relations. Clinical and research internships are available in medicine, social work, public health, physical therapy, nutrition and other health professions.

Rooms are double, and are furnished with beds, desks, wardrobes, air conditioners, and private bathroom. The building has a laundry room, wireless internet, television and reading areas, board game tables, a kitchen and dining area, cleaning service twice a week and 24-hour security. There is also a bike rental (with helmets!) for your convenience.

Brian Phillips is the KEI On-Site Coordinator in Bangkok. He is assisted by the International Office at MUIC.

The International office team will meet students at the airport, accompany the group during orientation and excursions, and mediate any problems or conflicts you might have. They are available at any hour by mobile phone (emergencies). The team has plenty of experience working with international students. All of the team members have Thai names and easy-to-pronounce nicknames.

KEI organizes day and weekend excursions throughout the term & an extended excursion. During these trips, your transportation, lodging, and any group activities are included.
