AsiaLearn and National University of Singapore - Asian Perspective: Learn Mandarin and Uncover Southeast Asia in 6 weeks

Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world. In fact, it is the native language of one out of five people in the world. As more and more international corporations cover grounds in China, being able to speak this increasingly important language is definitely an asset. Where is the best place to learn Mandarin without feeling like a fish out of water? In Singapore, of course, where you can learn with ease in a bilingual environment.

Embark on a 6-week summer program learning Mandarin, an increasingly important language in this century, and explore Southeast Asia in one of the region's leading nation-cities ? Singapore. In this program, you will attend a robust and fun 100 hours of basic Mandarin curriculum. Upon completion, you will have learned the basics in conversational, reading and writing skills that are applicable in modern social context. In addition, you will uncover the diversity and richness of Chinese and Southeast Asian cultures through films, documentaries, seminars, field trips and hands-on workshops. This program is tailored to undergraduate students of any discipline who wish to learn Mandarin and gain valuable insights into Southeast Asia during their summer break. No prior knowledge of the Mandarin language is required.

About Singapore

Singapore is both a country and a city with 4.5 million people and four official languages: Malay, Mandarin, Tamil, and English. Malay is the national language and English is the language of business. The standard of living in Singapore is among the highest in Asia, with state-of-the-art facilities for education, shopping, sports, and recreation. It has a diverse population of Chinese, Malay, Indian, Eurasian, and other ethnic groups. One cannot help but notice how clean and green the country is and how friendly the locals are to visitors. These observations may be attributed to social campaigns like the Courtesy Campaign, Keep Singapore Clean, and Keep Singapore Green.

With no natural resources of its own, Singapore has leveraged its strategic location as a trading hub, adhered to an open market economy, and focused on manufacturing while investing heavily in education. By the 1990s, the country had become one of the world's most prosperous nations with the highest per capita gross domestic product in Asia outside of Japan. The Port of Singapore is the busiest in the world, surpassing Hong Kong and Shanghai.
